John Bumstead owns a laptop refurbishing business and uses broken screens and defective graphics processors as filters to affect his photography.
The works in this exhibit are all part of his "Broken Screen of the Day" series, wherein John used broken LCD screens obtained in his practice as displays for other photographs, registering the final result with a camera. Even broken, liquid crystals still try to display the image sent from the graphics card, resulting in delectable distortions dictated by the particular damage inflicted upon it as well as by the particular signals rendered by the GPU.
In a more recent series, John began exploring the aesthetic potential of glitches deriving from issues in GPUs. See more of the artist's work in the links above.
